Core Challenges
1. Lead the design group responsible for product, artist campaigns, and brand.
2. Coordinate across all teams to build toward a holistic vision in a rapidly adaptive startup.
3. Enable bands of all sizes to make more money and connect with fans across a deeply divided music ecosystem.
Story
BandPage evolved from a popular Facebook app to an unrivaled industry hub, that gave musicians the control, revenue and deeper connection with fans denied to them by the world's major music platforms. We gave our millions of users a faster, better link to the billions of fans across Spotify, YouTube, Shazam, Pandora and more.
To lead our designers in creating great products, partner integrations, and artist campaigns, I collaborated with everyone at BandPage to:
I streamlined our design language so each artist's aesthetic could take center stage. I advocated for our users, helping stakeholders balance the needs of the business with those of artists big and small. I went over-time to save time for busy musicians and managers.
I am so proud of the culture we nurtured, and the work we did for artists around the world. I was impossibly fortunate to work with such brilliant partners, leaders, and friends.
The Marketing Site
Helping multiple audiences understand a complex product is tough. New and established artists, managers and labels, partners and press all saw the merit in our essential features, clear illustrations of our powerful network, and cross-industry testimonials—all backed up by a fluid set up and immediate value.
Roles — UX and visual design, Audience strategy, Copy-writing
The Artist Profile
Our central profiles gave fans a comprehensive look at their favorite bands, and enabled our partners—most of whom had no direct connection to musicians—to surface artist-maintained content to their users.
Roles — UX design, Art direction
The BandPage App
We built a powerful app for true music fans: Find, Follow and Share your favorite artists. Be the first to hear when they announce tour dates, host experiences, and release new music.
Roles — UX design, Art direction, Information architecture
Facebook + Widgets
The original BandPage was a single Facebook app — We built out a range of apps and website widgets to streamline the artist's neverending task of getting their music, videos, tour dates and store offers out across the web.
Roles — UX design, User research and testing
Partner Integrations
Keeping pace with our Business team's constant partner conversations kept us in a fugue state of auditing music platform apps and visualizing new product integrations, where the challenge was always to fuse our strategic needs with those of current and future partners.
Roles — UX design, Partner integration strategy
The Command Center
Artists could distribute content, tour dates and offers from one powerful place. A/B testing and closed betas helped us refine features, while transparency and light gamification motivated users. A mobile-centric experience was designed to check in on engagement and handle quick tasks on the go.
Roles — UX design, User research
Artist Offers + Campaigns
We created thousands of promotional graphics and hundreds of merch items for artists. We approached these campaigns as opportunities to test messaging and optimize the algorithms driving offers across integrations.
Roles — Art direction, Design, Production process
BandPage Culture
From hack-a-thon apps to our chef’s granola, off-site Camp BandPage shirts and celebrations of co-workers achieving citizenship, I used design to make our world a little more fun and inclusive.
Roles — Design, Event organization, Swag production
