Holistic approaches to interconnected challenges

Led by Laurene Powell Jobs, Emerson Collective invests in entrepreneurs and innovators driven by purpose and a sense of possibility, to expand opportunity and ensure the conditions for human flourishing. They partner with and support individuals and organizations tackling complex challenges in education and economic mobility, health and the environment, immigration and journalism.

My Challenges

1

Improve digital capabilities and workflows in a highly reactive environment

2

Help a largely non-technical team understand and build digital tools and experiences

3

Explore and experiment while adhering to + building on the company’s voice and identity

Designing for Good

I focus on the digital side of EC’s diverse projects, along with the creative branding and storytelling design studio for Emerson’s many efforts and organizations. My work has included site design, creative campaigns, story content, and civic engagement toolkits for our primary properties, as well as building sites, designing research papers, researching technology and securing vendors for various arms of the organization.

Early on, I partnered with the digital director to roadmap emersoncollective.com, and a centralized, extensible digital ecosystem to accelerate specialized teams in their work and enable each to leverage the others’ datasets and tools. Along the way, I’ve helped launch a vibrant community center in East Palo Alto California, create economic opportunity in Chicago, design and help build resources to assist America's hungry in finding food during the pandemic, showcase rich culture and civic activism in virtual art galleries, inform the public about voting rights, increase social equity in startups, and accelerate investment in the environment.

EC Year in Review

The team’s work is so voluminous and varied that it’s hard to keep track, so it’s important to find ways to bring the threads together, and celebrate what was accomplished. I led design for, prototyped, and built this site to wrap up 2017.

The Collective Series

While growing cultural tumult and the pandemic lockdown gripped the U.S., EC supported and celebrated a diverse array of storytellers, artists, and creators who brought people together. I helped create a virtual gallery showcasing rich culture and civic activism.

America’s Food Fund + GetFoodUSA

Food supply chains faltered fast when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and millions already struggling to find their next meal needed help. We assembled America’s Food Fund to raise funds for and thank people distributing food and preparing meals across the country. We also built GetFoodUSA, the searchable directory of locations offering free food assistance to the public.

Democracy Docket website design with headlines, a map, and infographics

Democracy Docket

As the U.S. elections system is manipulated to serve political ends, Marc Elias and his team fight to preserve our voting rights, and democracy. I designed a new home for Marc’s work, with new mapping and social tools that helped communicate complex issues to a broader audience.

Chicago CRED website design with a black and white group of people celebrating

Chicago CRED

CRED works with community leaders, like-minded organizations, and hundreds of young men and women to radically reduce gun violence and create hope. I designed, built and launched their original site, with their team in Chicago.

Inside Out + Dreamers

DACA and the DREAM Act helped ensure kids who had grown up in the USA could continue their lives here. When the program came under threat, Emerson rallied support behind it. I helped design and build campaigns connecting people with their representatives, thanking members of congress for their support, amplifying the community building of JR’s genius Inside Out project, and helping people have informed and compassionate conversations about immigration.

EC Company Website

The organization’s own website brings a unique challenge—how to illuminate the many ways EC contributes to positive change, while inspiring and inviting people to join in. Over the years, I’ve worked with the team to complete and prototype rich new visual systems for the constantly evolving website.
